  • Swedish Company: MySQL AB by – Michael Widenius (Monty), David Axmark and Allan Larsson
  • Name Combination: Michael’s Daughter name –“My” and SQL
  • Initially – PHP DB Extension to open source – not suitable for DBMS – Developed in(C & C++) for
    • Retrieve data – Website
    • Free DB servers for website with PHP developers,
    • Recompile with developer
    • Add storage engine as a plugin
    • Various members to introduce various storage engine to avoid Third parties.
    • SP/View/Triggers/Functions were not available.
  • Internal version release in – 1995
  • 3.19 – 3.20: Release in – 1996-97
  • 3.21 – 3.23: Major releases (For production) – 1998-2000
  • 4.0 – 4.1: Working towards RDBMS (Sub Queries /B-Tree) – 2001-2004
  • 5.0: Major release introduce as RDBMS – SP, trigger, View and Transaction – 2005
  • Sun Microsystems acquired MySQL AB for 1Bn – 2008
  • 5.1: Replication and most of the Bug fixed – 2008
  • 5.5: Release – Performance Improvement and many features -2010
  • Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems on 27 January 2010 for 7.4Bn
    • The name of the MySQL Dolphin (logo) is “Sakila,”
  • MySQL 5.7: announced in October 2015 (Latest version is 5.7.22 –as on Apr, 2018)
  • 6.0.11- alpha was announced on 22 May 2009 – but not released 😦
  • 7.x:  Version are assigned to NDB Cluster.
  • MySQL 8.0: was announced 12 September 2016 – Latest version
